Rumen acidosis is amajor healthproblem inmodern
dairy farming. It causes decreased intake, reduced
digestion andproduction losses. Besides, health
costswill increase due to an increased risk of e.g.
hoof problems anddisplaced abomasums.
Sodiumbicarbonate is a product that is commonly
used to prevent the incidence of rumen acidosis as it
is the cow’s natural buffer. However, the product has
themajor disadvantage that itworks only over a very
short period of time. It is quickly usedby the animal
due to its high solubility.
Some years ago, Provimi developedRupromin
Balancewhich is amore powerful alternative to
sodiumbicarbonate. Moreover, the formulationof
RuprominBalance has been improved. Experimental
data shows that the newformulationof Rupromin
Balanceworks very effcient. This is especially true
in the area betweenpH6 andpH5, where the risk of
rumen acidosis is largest.
RuprominBalance alsomaximizes feed intake and
improvesmilk production andmilk composition.

Due to the aimfor highperformance inmoderndairy cows, their dietsmay
lack structural fber or contain toomuch readily digestible carbohydrates.
Also, in situationswhere roughage availability is limitedor under heat stress
conditions, intake of quickly fermentable carbohydrates is in excess. Such
unbalanceddiets infuence rumen functionby high ruminal acidproduction,
resulting in reducedpHof the rumen. If saliva production is not able tobuffer this
decrease inpH, rumenpHdrops below5.5 and subacute rumen acidosis occurs.
